‘Yakṣa Mārga Mukura’ is an extensive research work authored by Dr. Manorama B.N., published by the Kuriya Vittala Shastri Yakṣagāna Pratishthana in collaboration with the Noopura Bhramari IKS Centre. This monumental study spans 2,000 years of Āṅgikābhinaya (expressive gestures and movements), meticulously analysing nearly 130 primary treatises and over 300 secondary sources. This magnaminous book comprises a total of 840 pages, reflecting a detailed exploration of the traditions and evolution of performative expressions in Indian art and culture.
The book was unveiled on October 1, 2022, at auditorium of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, in the presence of distinguished guests, including Rajya Sabha member and Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, local MLAs, academics, Vice-Chancellor of Kolar University Dr. Niranjana Vanalli, and Karnataka Bank Managing director Mahabaleshwara Bhat, among other experts and scholars.
Now this book awarded the Best Book of 2022 with a cash prize of 25,000 INR by the Karnataka Yakshagana Academy, Karnataka Government, on 19th November 2024. Additionally, received the Karnataka Samskrita University Sanskrit Grantha Puraskara in the Basavappa Shastri category, with a cash prize of 10,000 INR, on 30th January 2024, in Bengaluru.
Other Recognition and Impact of ‘Yakṣa Mārga Mukura’:
- The foreword to this book has been written by Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh, and numerous stalwarts and scholars have shared their profound experiences and opinions, highlighting the greatness of the work.
- A day-long symposium on this book was organized by Mangalore University, in collaboration with Dr. P. Dayananda Pai and Shri P. Satish Pai Yakshagana Study Centre, Mangalgangotri, and the Kuriya Vittala Shastri Cultural Foundation (R.), Ujire, where experts and delegates discussed the book’s contributions on 23, December 2022. At the Yakshagana Kalakendra, Mangala Gangothri. The event took place at the Yakshagana Kala Kendra, Mangalgangotri, the inaugural session featured Prof. P. Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, Chancellor of Mangalore University, as the chief guest, and Shri Rajesh G., Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, Mangalore, as the guest of honour. Resource persons included Dr. M. Prabhakara Joshi, a versatile scholar and artist, Prof. M. L. Samaga, Principal and Artist, and Dr. Manorama B. N., There was a demonstration by art researchers and expert artists, including Himmela performances by Sri Puttige Raghurama Holla, Sri Padmanabha Upadhyaya, and Sri Murari Kadambalittaya. - A special book reading and discussion session was hosted by IGNCA, Bengaluru, on 28th June 2023, at the Seminar Hall, IGNCA RCB. The event highlighted the relevance and insights of the book. The session was attended by IGNCA Director D. Mahendra, the staff of IGNCA, lecturers, research scholars, and postgraduate students of Performing Arts from Bengaluru University.
- A special introductory talk, lasting one hour, on the book and its contents was organized by Vasavi Sahitya Kala Vedike, Sullia, Dakshina Kannada, on the Zoom platform. The session was also telecasted on their YouTube channel on 11th September 2022.
- This book also serves as a syllabus material at the Noopura Bhramari IKS Centre for the course “Nāṭyaśāstra Karaṇa Lakṣaṇa Jñāna” Dr. Manorama B.N. is the teacher and mentor for this course, guiding students in understanding the nuances of Āṅgikābhinaya and the principles outlined in the Nāṭyaśāstra
