Gender perceptions in Performing arts

ಕಳೆದ ಬಾರಿಯ ರಂಗಭ್ರಮರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೃತ್ಯ ಗುರು, ಕಲಾವಿದೆ,
ವಿಮರ್ಶಕಿ ಪದ್ಮಜಾ ಸುರೇಶ್ ಅವರು ಭರತನಾಟ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರುಷ-
ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯರ ನಡುವಿನ ಲಿಂಗ ಅಸಮಾನತೆಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ
ತಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟು ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಹಿರಿಯ
ನೃತ್ಯಗುರು ಮುರಳೀಧರರಾಯರು ದರ್ಶನ ಭ್ರಮರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದ
ಭರತನಾಟ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರುಷರ ಅಭಿನಯ ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ
ಸಂವಾದವೂ ಇದಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ತಾಳಮದ್ದಳೆ ಕಲಾವಿದ,
ವಿಮರ್ಶಕ, ಸಂಶೋಧಕ, ಸಂಘಟಕ, ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ವೆಬ್‌ಸೈಟ್‌ನ
ಸಂಪಾದಕರಾದ ಡಾ| ಎಂ. ಪ್ರಭಾಕರ ಜೋಷಿ ತಮ್ಮ
ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ತಿಂಗಳ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಗಳದ ಚಾವಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ
ತೆರೆದಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

The article discusses gender imaging in a powerful manner.

Yet there could be other perceptions too.

To say that women go well with male dresses, and not the

same case if it is the otherway round; does not by itself

establish that women are more suited to perform / express

both genders better. Both genders have their own advantages

and disadvantages in depicting the other sex.

The belief that a women’s body is better suited to perform

Bharatanatyam, is a cultural presumption by frequency.

Bharatanatyam could look different, and yet equally artistic, if

it was historically performed more by men for long.

So also, the face and ethos of Bharatanatyam could have

had a different tradition, different of aesthetics if it were taught

in the historical period by female Gurus. Still it could have

had the same level of development as it has today in a different

way.
